Arch 112

Instructor: Carl Karlen, Spring 2018, Washington University in St. Louis, Sam Fox School of Visual Art and Design

My second semester in Washington University’s undergraduate architecture program focused on taking the lessons we had learned in analog making and adding to them by introducing digital processes. We learned Rhino, photoshop, and illustrator as well as how to prepare digital files to be laser cut. The idea of the semester was designing a Flying Machine. My final project involved laser cutting mylar components, hand dyeing them with alcohol inks, laminating two components and utilizing elastic cord to lash the folded components together. This project resulted in one of my favorite models that I ever produced.

Each mylar shape was scanned into photo files and then utilized to make an accurate digital drawing of the model.
